I am at the Mark: Called to Teach

I am at the Mark: Called to Teach: Oct. 13 - I'm IN - Praise the Lord

The insight that I've gained is that there is truly a need for early literacy and that it is worth advocating for.

Interviewing a teacher and principle influenced my drive for the interest I've chosen.

The area of interest I'm focusing on is Early Literacy and the topics are Parent Involvement, Funding, and Exposure/Environment.

How do you all feel about early literacy and how has it personally and professionally meet your expectations for the children both in and outside your home?

  2. Hi Catrice,

I thought I emailed you on yesterday. Thank you so much for posting it makes me feel better that someone sees my blog. Didn't know if I were doing things right or not still feeling my way.

I do have a passion to teach and I just love being able to share with all people especially children. I believe in the scripture that states "train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (the teaching). If we can instill in our children good and positive things while their young they will have it when their old. So as it is for good behavior so should it be for learning.

  3. Hello Carmen,

In order to let parents know how we as educator incorporate literacy in our classroom is to encourage parents to visit the school. This show parents how we model literacy in the classroom and it will help them to model it in their homes. I believe the role of a teacher is to make sure that early literacy skills are implemented in everything we do with our children. I know as a mother and a teacher that we can be overwhelmed with stress and we as educators need to be a little more patient and flexible with our parents and understand that some of them are trying to contribute and we need to know where to draw the line on their experience and their knowledge of education.

  5. Hi Shawanda,

Literacy is every where and in every thing that we do as educators. I understand that all parents are not a like and that when it comes to the younger parents they must be encouraged to participate in the activities that will help them better help their child/ren. I really don't understand the bases for so of your statements in your posting.
As a mother, teacher, and educator because it goes beyond the class I don't feel overwhelmed or stressed about working with children or their parents. Teaching is my purpose, giving and helping is my passion this is why I chose Early Literacy. I desire for our children to have what they need especially our young black males who are devastated by this issue and the drop rate is alarming. I'm not perfect I do get disappointed when parents show no interest in their child's education and this is when one must be prayer and flexible to get them to come around and get involved.
